Black Pepper Beef Recipe

A quick and flavorful dish perfect for busy weeknights! This Black Pepper Beef recipe combines tender beef cubes with a rich, peppery sauce and vibrant vegetables, all cooked to perfection in just 30 minutes.

Beef + Marinade

  • 1.5 lbs beef filet mignon (cut into bite-sized cubes)
  • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup beef stock
  • 1 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp MSG (optional)
  • 2 tbsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Sichuan peppercorn powder
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 4 tbsp neutral oil (divided)
  • 1 red bell pepper (chopped into petals)
  • 1 green bell pepper (chopped into petals)
  • 1/2 onion (chopped into petals)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp ginger (minced)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  1. Marinate the Beef
    • Cut the beef filet mignon into bite-sized cubes.
    • Marinate the beef with Shaoxing wine, soy sauce, salt, cornstarch, and neutral oil. Set aside.
  2. Prepare Vegetables and Sauce
    • Chop red and green bell peppers, and onion into petal shapes.
    • Finely mince garlic and ginger.
    • Combine all sauce ingredients in a bowl, ensuring the cornstarch is well dissolved.
  3. Sear the Beef
    • Heat 2 tbsp of neutral oil in a hot wok.
    • Add the marinated beef and sear for 3–4 minutes, ensuring a nice crust. Remove from the wok and set aside.
  4. Cook Vegetables
    • Add the remaining oil to the wok.
    • Sauté garlic, ginger, and chopped vegetables for about 2 minutes, until slightly translucent.
  5. Combine and Finish
    • Return the beef to the wok.
    • Pour in the sauce mixture and stir until it thickens.
    • Finish with a drizzle of sesame oil.
